Just inserted the SiteOrigin layouts titled "Default Home" and the backgrounds are missing from the "Project Galleries", "Why Choose Us", and "Client Testimonials" sections.

The backgrounds and placeholders images of the pre-defined page builder layouts will only be visible if you have used the demo data importer after installing the theme. If you already made changes to your website I don't recommend to use the demo data importer anymore at this point.
I have attached the 4 background images inside the zip package at the bottom of this message. You can upload the images to the page builder rows by clicking the wrench icon and select "Edit Row" from the submenu:
A modal will show up where you can upload the image inside the "Design" panel:
