The issue is caused because the portrait uploaded image is 500 pixels in width. The images of the featured page widget will to cropped to a fixed size if the image is at least 850 pixels in width.
As the images are responsive it's not really a solution to set a fixed height for it. The best way to fix this is to resize the image to let's say 851 pixels in width.
