The ideal logo size is to keep your logo image within 245 (width) x 90 (height) pixels. The width is not really that necessary to keep it within 245px but the height is, as the navigation bar is 90 pixels in height.
The recommend logo size for the default logo (not for the retina) is indeed 245x90. Of course this is not a fixed size an some small or bigger should also be fine. If the source code I see you've uploaded a image that's 315x100 in size but the image has a lot of white space around the actual logo design (see attachment).
To fix this you should reduce the whitespace and make the actual logo some bigger in that specific image size.

I'm having nothing but trouble trying to get the Logo to be the right size.
You say 245x90 is the correct size, the logo that I downloaded and inserted is 315x90.
You can tell by the attachment that it is too small to fit the space.
